More than 760 players and officials involved in university rugby are in Kimberley for the annual University Sports South Africa (USSA) men’s and women’s Rugby Sevens Championships.
This is the first time the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) will host this event, which is open to the public.
In this series of competitive rugby matches, 24 teams of higher education institutions from across the country, as well as from Botswana, will gather at the SPU Sports Campus Fields and Windhoek Draught Park.
The event already commenced on Tuesday (20/09) with a 5 km SPU Campus Night Race, as 20 September was proclaimed by Unesco as the International Day of University Sport.
An opening ceremony is set to take place on Friday (23/09) at 17:00, with the championships on Friday and Saturday, from 09:00 to 17:00. The format of seven players on each team, with each match lasting a mere seven minutes, makes each match electrifying and fast-paced. Expect painted faces, wigs and outlandish outfits – the norm at Rugby Sevens matches.
Gemmie, SPU’s mascot, will keep spirits high.
