The first edition of a new 100-miler that brings mountain bikers to the gateway of the Karoo, takes place in two months’ time.

Presented by Oryx Endurance, the Ride2TheKaroo event on 26 August takes riders from Kimberley to the Klipkraal Guest Farm outside Hopetown, covering approximately 166 km.

According to Kobus Burger the route traverses through the topography of the Northern Cape, including gravel roads.

The full-distance race starts with a flat section. Riders then make their way down and over the Modder River and head over to the Karoo, with the gate to the Karoo as the finish line.

This race is open to solo participants, and relay teams that consist of two or four riders, each covering 40 km or 80 km, respectively.

To help prepare for this 100-miler, Oryx Endurance gives a few brief tips:

  • assess your fitness level and set realistic goals;
  • create a structured training plan that includes endurance rides, intervals, and strength training;
  • familiarise yourself with similar terrain by training on gravel roads and practising bike handling skills;
  • fuel your body with a balanced diet and stay hydrated during training; and

  • listen to your body and give it time to adapt and heal.

The entry process for Ride2TheKaroo closes on 21 August.
