A total of 289 gas cylinders which were, apparently, filled at an unregistered refilling station and above all with substandard gas, were confiscated by the police in the ZF Mgcawu District.

Sgt Omphile Masegela, police spokesperson for the district, said the discovery had been made on Sunday, 29 September, after information was operationalised about a suspect who was allegedly collecting illegaly filled and sealed gas bottles to sell in the area.

Selling cylinders with substandard gas that was refilled at an unregistered station, is a contravention of the law.

The truck with a trailer was stopped outside Upington, and 289 of these filled gas bottles of various sizes and brands were discovered.

The brandholders were contacted for confirmation of refilling, and they had no knowledge of it.

The cylinders, valued at R273 260, as well as the truck with trailer, were seized.

A 49-year-old suspect was detained for contravention of the Consumer Protection Act and contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act.
