An exercise route has been introduced at the Mediclinic Gariep in Kimberley for its healthcare personnel.
It consists of three short walking routes located within the hospital grounds, with one of the routes including four activity stations.
Healthcare personnel often suffer from emotional exhaustion, and a lack of physical exercise, sunlight, and relaxation contribute to depression and burnout.
The exercises that can be done at the activity stations include muscle strengthening and cardiorespiratory exercise. The routes and activities are clearly marked, and walkers know exactly what to do and where.
The reason for this initiative is to provide the staff with an opportunity to enjoy a quick, safe exercise before and after shifts, and even during their meal breaks.
It also offers numerous health benefits, including weight loss, improved heart health, reduced risk of diabetes, better mood and mental health, reduced risk of chronic diseases, cancer prevention, and increased intake of vitamin D, the hospital stated.
