Northern Cape Bowls will be sending two teams to compete in this year’s Bowls South Africa U30 Interdistrict Championship.
Presented by Bowls South Africa (BSA) and hosted by North West Bowls at the Klerksdorp Bowling Club from Saturday, 23 September, to Tuesday, it promises to be a showdown among young bowlers from across the country.
Team one, led by Charles Peter Mathewson, includes Driaan van Niekerk, Charl Labuschagne and Andrei Matthee.
The second team, captained by skip Le Roux Fourie, boasts Japie Steyn, Danie Herholdt and Janet Brand.
René van Niekerk is the team manager.
Northern Cape Bowls clinched the U30 Interdistrict Championship title in 2018, and aims to do the same this year. Two members of the 2018 championship-winning squad, Mathewson and Van Niekerk, will once again wear the Northern Cape colours.
One of the standout achievements of Northern Cape Bowls is the nurturing of young talent through rigorous development programmes. By fostering talent at U20 and U15 level, local clubs within the district have contributed to the growth of the sport.
This year’s participation of two teams instead of one is a testament to the success of these efforts.
Northern Cape Bowls has not only increased its representation, but also instilled a sense of pride and purpose in the younger generation of bowlers.
