Suspects, who were busy off-loading copper cables, were arrested at a scrap yard in Kuruman and were charged for tampering with essential infrastructure.
Sgt Timothy Sam, media spokesperson of the police, said these arrests were made as part of a number of intelligence driven crime prevention operations that were executed in three of the five policing districts in the Northern Cape during the past weekend.
Sam said the operations commenced on Friday, 24 March, and concluded on Sunday, 26 March. It focused on raids, stop and searches, intensive patrols and other crime prevention actions.
The men at the scrap yard in Kuruman in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District were arrested after the Highway Patrol Unit received information regarding a white Toyota Quantum combi that was off-loading copper cables.
The information was immediately followed up. At the scrap-yard the suspects noticed the police and tried to flee, but were swiftly cornered and arrested.
The vehicle and 64 rolls of clean copper cables, valued at R35 700, was confiscated by the police.
The suspects, who are 23 and 38 years old respectively, were charged for tampering with essential infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen property and will appear in the Kathu Magistrate Court soon.
In the ZF Mgcawu District, police arrested four suspects in Postmasburg and Daniëlskuil for dealing in drugs.
A total of 109 tablets of mandrax, 24 ziplock bags of tik, and a substantial amount of dagga, all valued at R39 989, were seized.
In the Pixley ka Seme district, police members in Hopetown raided an illegal shebeen and confiscated and disposed of the concoctions.
A fine of R500 was issued to the 27-year-old male suspect for operating an illegal shebeen. A 44-year-old male was arrested for riotous behavior.
The police will increase their efforts to prevent, combat and investigate crime and ro ensure all inhabitants are safe, said Sam.
