Frances Nel was celebrated as the Kimberley Road Runners’ Athlete of the Year at a recent prize-giving.
Nel was named club’s sportswoman of the year, and Peagel Babi sportsman of the year.
Atilla Bester received the junior athlete of the year trophy, while the Christo Bothma floating trophy went to Charmain Ras.
Other awards at this annual event are numerous.
Frances Nel as the AGW podium winner, with Anel van der Nest as the outside AGW podium winner.
The AGW category winners: were Charmain Ras, Martin Cronjé, and Anel van der Nest.
Alphy Seeme and Gerrit Schlebusch shared the Two Oceans novice title.
Charmain Ras was lauded for completing her 10th Two Oceans marathon, Lulu Mxekezo her 11th, Abram Ditsebe his 14th, and Denzil Beukes his 30th. Sonia Hendricks was recognised for covering 10 km to 21,1 km in the Two Oceans race. Abram Ditsebe and Peagel Babi won the Sainsbury Medal for covering 56 km under five hours.
The Comrades novice title went to Alphy Seeme, Josua Molapong, Nadine Dames, Gerrit Schlebush, and Makuke Molepo. The Bill Rowan Medal went to Abram Ditsebe, Alphy Seeme, Peagal Babi, and Frances Nel for finishing under nine hours.
Lulu Mxekezo was honoured for her 12th Comrades, Abram Ditsebe his 14th, Christo Brink his 32nd, and Kobus van der Walt his 34th.
Trophies
The women’s time trail trophy went to Arista van Zyl, while Dolf van der Westhuizen won the men’s.
Others included the Comrades novice of the year award (Alphy Seeme); Skillie Skilpad (Bheki Nyembe); Speedy Ganzalos (Kobus van der Walt); and the Mark van Niekerk trophy (Frances Nel)
The merit certificate for competing in five of Athletics Griqualand West’s (AGW) 13 races went to Jean Arp, Roschelle Botes, Martin Cronjé, Charlotte Diederichs, Lisinda Grobler, Steven Grobler, Andrew Helena, Gerda Helena, Marli Kasselman, Makuke Molepo, Frances Nel, Charmain Ras, Samantha Shepherd, Anet van Heerden, Arista van Zyl, and Rudi Witteveen.
