The principle of “no work, no pay” will strictly be applied without fear or favour to striking members of the National Education Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu), said the national Department of Health on Monday (06/03). This came after Nehawu members joined the strike on Monday due to collapsed wage negotiations. The government offers a rise of 4,7%, while the unions demand 10%. In Kimberley, Lulu Mxekezo, Health spokesperson, said the Northern Cape Department of Health had noted with concern the violent and disruptive actions by some members of Nehawu that affect access to mainly major hospitals, such as to the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in the city, and also in Upington. “The department respects trade union members’ right to strike. However, such right should not violate the constitutional rights of others to life and access to healthcare. Any form of violence and intimidation directed at health workers, patients and infrastructure are condemned in the strongest terms.” She confirmed the department was working with health authorities and law enforcement agencies to monitor the situation to ensure rapid response and urgent intervention to minimise the impact of the strike on the provision of essential health serv
