More than 300 persons benefitted from the first cashless shopping experience held at a Kimberley hospital.

The desire of the administrative personnel at the Mediclinic Gariep to contribute to a project led to this unique “shopping experience” on a part of the parking lot of the hospital on Friday, 25 October.

After a campaign was held for donations, those in need were informed about the event.

On the day, more than 300 people showed up, each receiving a “shopping voucher”. With the voucher as method of payment, each could select nine items, explained Denise Coetzee, patient experience manager.

Items and products donated were neatly displayed, and the specific flow of shoppers to browse and make their choice, made this cashless shopping experience at the Mediclinic Gariep a joyful occasion.

Donations of clothing for men, women, and children were received, as well as shoes, books, linen, toys and more, and those with a voucher had a variety to choose from.

Several food products were also donated, such as 50 kg maize and 50 kg samp from Numain Distributors, 240 kg maize and 240 kg pasta from GWK, 200 packets of pasta from Atlantic Foods, 208 bottles of water from Manzi, 25 kg sausage from Winterhoek Safaris, and 100 bread rolls from Monument Spar, which were also handed out.

“The reaction of all the donators, as well as those of the receivers of the items, were overwhelmingly positive, and the personnel is planning to make this an annual event,” Coetzee said.
