The commander of the Upington police station, Brig. Petrus Coetzee, was appointed on 1 October 2022 after the station had been under acting management for some period.
However, Coetzee could not take up the post immediately as he was appointed as the acting district commander of the ZF Mgcawu District.
Coetzee could finally take up his post on Monday, 14 August.
He is optimistic about the plans he has for Upington, and believes he has built sound relationships with police members and the community over the years, as he is no stranger to the city and its residents.
Born and bred in Kimberley, his career as a police official began in 1986 when he enlisted. After his basic training, he was placed in Upington – and as he progressed in his career he worked in Paballelo, Rosedale, Marydale, and Griquatown in different components.
Coetzee says he has an open door policy and intends to have good relations with the businesses, taxi associations, and all forums that form part of this community.
He will be giving more attention to the problematic areas and their occurring crimes, crime hotspots, and crimes affecting women and children.
