Women’s rugby tournament in Kimberley: celebrating growth and talent

The first full-time female coach of SA Rugby at national level will be the guest of honour at a women’s rugby regional tournament in Kimberley.

Hosted by the Frances Baard Rugby Region, it takes place on Saturday, 17 May. The tournament celebrates the growth and development of women’s rugby in the Northern Cape, bringing together regional teams to compete for the 2025 Griquas Regional Champions title.

It promises a day filled with competitive matches, community engagement, and grassroots development activities aimed at inspiring the next generation of female rugby players.

Various regional teams from within the Northern Cape will take part.

Female coach’s journey shows progress in women’s rugby

Laurian Johannes-Haupt is SA Rugby’s first full-time female coach at national level. Her journey from a Springbok woman’s player to a leading coach underscores the transformative power of sport. It also exemplifies the progress women’s rugby has made in South Africa.

Her presence highlights SA Rugby’s ongoing commitment to nurturing talent and promoting gender inclusion.

Johannes-Haupt represented South Africa at the 2010 Rugby World Cup and earned 12 test caps as Springbok player. She has achieved significant success as a coach. Amongst other, she led the DHL Western Province team to two women’s premier division titles and guided the junior Springbok women’s team.

Her participation in the World Rugby and Gallagher Coaching Internship Programme solidifies her role as a trailblazer and role model.

Event grows sport at grassroots level

Melissa Niewenhuizen, chairperson of Griquas Women Rugby, says they are proud to support this tournament and to witness the incredible growth of women’s rugby in the region.
