Members of the Segami family are struggling to cope with Relebogile’s (11) murder.

According to Mathapelo Siwisa, EFF-MP who works on the party’s gender violence committee, Relebogile’s mother, Shariema Segami, has been admitted for psychiatric treatment as she is not coping with the situation.

“We will speak to her medical team as to how we can assist the family during this ordeal.”

Kagisho Segami, the girl’s father, says he is struggling to come to grips with his daughter’s murder.

“Like my wife, I cannot eat and sleep. I had to drag myself to court today,” he said.

“Relebogile’s siblings, an older girl of 13 years and a younger boy of nine years, are also struggling and do not have the strength to attend school.”

Kagisho says he was part of the search team who found his child’s body.

We are now staying with my mother, as we cannot stay in the house close to the murder scene. I must find a job and get my children back to school.”

Siwisa says she is supporting the family and community.

“The accused will be found guilty, and justice will be served for all the other victims out there. He stands accused in another case that happened in 2020,” she said in reference to Itumeleng Machabe (24), who is on trial.

David Segami, a great uncle of the deceased, says the family knows the suspect well.

“He was a trusted friend. Relebogile knew him, and probably trusted him. Allegedly he gave her money and she walked off with him,” David said.

“Her body was found naked, with a branch on top of it. I saw the body – it was so traumatic.

“There she lay, a girl of 11, raped and murdered by a much older man.

“Why must people do such horrible things to our children?

“The suspect should not get bail, as the community will kill him. One person said he wanted to decapitate him and throw the head at his family’s front door.”

Itumeleng Machabe (24) is accused of raping and murdering Relebogile Segami (11).

Members of the community protesting outside the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court, demanding that bail be denied rape and murder suspect Itumeleng Machabe (24) on 13 April.
