A cash-in-transit heist took place in Kimberley this morning.

The police in the Northern Cape have launched the 72-hour activation plan following a cash-in-transit heist that claimed the life of a SBV security officer.

On Friday (05/08) at about 04:55, security officials were conducting their day-to-day duties of collecting and dropping off money when they were accosted along the R31 in Kimberley.

According to reports, a group of suspects in a BMW rammed the cash van, causing it to roll over. The suspects then placed explosives onto the cash van to gain access to the money.

As a result of the explosion, one security officer succumbed to his injuries on the scene, while three others were taken to a local hospital for further medical care.

Col Mashay Gamieldien, police spokesperson, confirmed that the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money in a taxi.

The police have activated maximum resources and are on the lookout for the getaway vehicle, which has been established to be either a Hyundai H1 or Toyota Quantum.

Police have registered a case of cash-in-transit robbery, murder and attempted murder.
