Tik with an estimated street value of R292 800 was confiscated by police members in Upington.

Sgt Omphile Masegela, Upington Corporate Communication officer, said members of the Upington Border Police and K9 unit acted swiftly after receiving information about a vehicle that was allegedly transporting drugs to Upington.

They followed up on the information and located the vehicle. On searching the vehicle, as well as the residence of the vehicle owner, the drugs were discovered.

Masegela said a 40-year-old male foreign national is in custody for dealing in drugs and is expected to appear in court soon.

An alleged chop shop owner was arrested in Lerato Park, Kimberley.
  • In another unrelated case, an alleged chop shop owner was nabbed in Lerato Park, Kimberley, after being found in possession of alleged stolen vehicle parts.

Capt. Olebogeng Tawana, police spokesperson, said members of Kimberley Crime Intelligence, Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit and the Crime Scene Management section acted after receiving information about illegal activities on a certain premises in Lerato Park.

On the premises, the team found a Mazda 323, which was reported stolen in Kimberley in 2021.

The vehicle was found chopped and dismantled. Some of the parts were found stored at another premises near to the alleged chop shop.

The owner of the chop shop was arrested and charged with two counts of theft of motor vehicles, and for illegal dealing with scrap metal.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 10 January.
