For submitting a fraudulent matric certificate, a 27-year-old man from Taung was handed down a R20 000 fine or 18 month imprisonment sentence for fraud.

Lt Col. Sergio Kock, police spokesperson, said the sentence was handed down to Mpho Gift Sekwenyane in the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 19 July, after being found guilty.

A 27-year-old man from Taung was found guilty of fraud after submitting a fraudulent matric certificate.

This came after Sekwenyane applied to become a police official during the police’s 2021-’22 recruitment drive and submitted a fraudulent matric certificate.

A thorough investigation followed and he was arrested in March at his home in Buxton Village, near Taung.

Maj. Gen. Henriëtte de Waal, deputy provincial commissioner for Corporate Services, commended Det. Sgt Neo Mduane of the provincial anti-corruption unit for the team’s meticulous investigation.

“We hope this conviction will serve as a deterrent to others who attempt to commit similar crimes,” said De Waal.
