Two male suspects, aged 37 and 40 years, have been arrested for being in possession of endangered plants.

According to Lt. Col Sergio Kock, police spokesperson, the suspects were stopped just after midnight on Wednesday, 4 October, at a vehicle control point between Steinkopf and Port Nolloth.

Their double cab bakkie was searched, and ten 50 kg bags, filled with 4 485 Conophytum Bilobum plants, were found.

The suspects were charged under the Northern Cape Nature Conservation Act for the illegal possesion of endangered plants.

Members of Springbok’s Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit, Public Order Policing (POP) and the police in Steinkopf participated.

The suspects were expected to appear in the Springbok Magistrates’ Court in due course.
