Two young men were arrested in Deben in the Northern Cape for the possession of suspected stolen copper, while three were arrested for dealing in drugs.

In the first incident, a 23-year-old man was arrested on Friday, 2 February, after police members received information that led them to a scrapyard. Here the suspect was trying to sell copper cables.

In the second incident an 18-year-old man was apprehended for possession of suspected stolen copper cable on Saturday, 3 February, at about 13:30.

Later the day at 15:30, police members arrested three men aged 18, 22, and 24 years for dealing in drugs in Deben. The members acted on information received from community patrollers. Dagga, tik, and cash were confiscated during the arrest.

All the suspects will soon appear in the Kathu Magistrates’ Court, said Capt. Mosimaneotsile Letsapa, police spokesperson.

  • On Sunday, 4 February, in Keimoes, police arrested a 33-year-old Nigerian man for the alleged possession and selling of drugs.

Sgt Omphile Masegela, police spokesperson in the ZF Mcgawu District, said this operation was conducted by members of Crime Prevention following information received about a house where drugs are allegedly kept.

The police discovered tik and Mandrax tablets to the estimated value of R12 400, as well as cash which is believed to be the proceeds of drugs.

The suspect will appear in court soon.

As part of the continuing Operation Shanela, detectives in the five districts of the Northern Cape also recently traced 89 wanted suspects who have been evading the police, while 98 persons were arrested for other crimes.

Disruptive actions also resulted in the confiscation of large volumes of alcoholic beverages, drugs and numerous dangerous weapons at illegal shebeens, and the recovery of stolen livestock and suspected stolen property in hot spot crime areas.

Suspects in various crimes were arrested over the past few days in the Northern Cape.
