In a powerful demonstration of commitment to gender equality and empowerment, Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine hosted a series of Women’s Month indabas throughout August, bringing together over 2 500 women.
The inaugural event was marked by the presence of Nonceba Mhlauli, deputy minister in the presidency, who delivered a keynote address emphasising this year’s theme, “Investing in Women and Accelerating Progress”.
The indabas served as a platform for female colleagues at the Sishen Mine to engage in critical discussions on the advancement of women in mining. With a strong focus on overcoming women’s challenges in the industry, and accelerating their progress, the event highlighted the importance of creating inclusive environments where women can thrive and lead.
André Roux, senior general manager of Kumba Iron Ore, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women in the mining sector.
“At Kumba Iron Ore we believe that investing in women is a strategic one. Women are central to our vision of a future where the mining industry is more diverse, inclusive, and innovative. The indabas are a testament to our ongoing efforts to create opportunities for women to excel and lead in every aspect of our operations,” he said.
Mhlauli echoed this sentiment, underscoring women’s critical role in the mining industry.
“Promoting gender equality and empowering women is not a favour; it is the right thing to do. When we invest in women, we are investing in the future of our industry and our country. The success stories of women in mining that we celebrate today are proof that when women are given the opportunity, they will rise and bring others with them,” she said.
Mhlauli also highlighted the significant strides made towards gender equality in the mining sector, while acknowledging the remaining challenges. She called for continued collaboration between the government, industry leaders, and civil society to dismantle systemic barriers and create a mining industry that is not only inclusive, but also sustainable and prosperous.
