The tenth annual Spitskop Dam Carp Bonanza saw anglers from all over enjoying a weekend of camaraderie and speaking the common language of fishing, while angling for the heaviest carp.
This event, presented by Wild Fly Angling in Kimberley, took place from 4 to 6 October at the Spitskop Dam near Vaalharts.
Hans Wessels brought in the heaviest carp (7,165 kg) and won R25 000 cash.
For the second heaviest carp (7,055 kg), Leon le Roux won R10 000 cash.
Ziyaad Bhayat, with a carp of 6,68 kg, ended third and won a R5 000 shopping voucher.
Other prizes, including cash and shopping vouchers, were handed out to anglers in position four to 20.
Muhammad Seedat, owner of Wild Fly Angling and organiser, said after opening his business that specialises in fishing gear 11 years ago, he started to host the bonanza.
With excellent cash prizes in mind, anglers can enjoy the benefits of fishing, including interacting with nature.
“We need to promote it to youngsters so they can learn about life and go back to our roots,” he said, remarking that fishing is a prehistoric practice and part of humanity’s roots.
Anglers can look forward to an 11th edition of this competition in 2025.
