Painting city Gemmie red in celebration

Gemmie, mascot of the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley, and the SPU’s cheerleading squad painted the city red on Monday, 3 February. This was to spread the word that the SPU has qualified, for the first time ever, to participate in the Varsity Shield tournament. Gemmie and the cheerleaders visited the Northern Cape and Diamantveld High School, as well as the Staats Primary School. Two parades through the streets also took place. The SPU’s first Varsity Shield game, against the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), takes place at the Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley on Friday, 14 February, at 17:00. This serves as the opening match of the tournament.
