Women interested to participate in rugby as a sport can make use of the opportunity by attending the Women’s Rugby Clinic on Saturday, 15 March, in Kimberley.
Women in the community, schools, clubs, and local organisations are invited to participate.
The clinic, presented by the Griqualand West Rugby Union (GWRU), is designed for girls from Gr. 8 to older women, aiming to foster rugby skills but also teamwork, confidence, and leadership qualities.
Kat Swanepoel, manager of amateur rugby at the GWRU, says no previous experience in playing rugby is needed – the only prerequisite is a willingness to play the game. Older women are welcome to show up, “up to the age you see yourself fit to play rugby.”
This clinic will be the first of its kind presented by the GWRU.
According to Swanepoel, the South African Rugby Union (Saru) is focussing on a national drive to expand women’s rugby in the country.
One of the aims is the establishment of provincial women’s leagues. Visits to schools are taking place to promote rugby as a women’s sport, and Swanepoel says the reaction is overwhelming at some schools.
Another way women can get involved in rugby is as a referee, he comments.
Romeo Syfers, chairperson of the Frances Baard Rugby Union, says rugby is a powerful tool for personal development.
“Engaging in rugby helps women build resilience, improve physical fitness, and cultivate lifelong friendships.
“The clinic will provide a safe and supportive environment,” he says.
