Another victory for the Suzuki Griquas pushed them even higher on the Currie Cup log. After their victory of 42-21 over the Vodacom Bulls on Sunday, 24 August, the Griquas are now in third place with 20 points.
Cheetahs and Boland Cavaliers are leading with 21 points, and Griquas are firmly eyeing a semi-final. Their next clash on Friday, 29 August, when they face the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, could prove decisive for semi-final hosting rights.
During the clash against the Bulls at Tuine Grizzlies Rugby Club in Pretoria, the Bulls made an early breakthrough when Stravino Jacobs dotted down, converted by Boeta Chamberlain.
According to griquasrugby.co.za, the Griquas reacted far from rattled, and responded with composure.
Gurswin Wehr, whose speed and finishing would become a recurring theme, struck twice in quick succession to turn the tide.

Soon after, captain Cebo Dlamini muscled his way over, giving Griquas a commanding 21โ7 halftime advantage.
Griquas turned the screw after the interval. Wehr completed his hat-trick minutes into the second half, sparking celebrations. But this was not a one-man show. The forwards imposed themselves on the contest, with Janco Uys scoring from a rolling maul and replacement Zane Bester powering over to extend the lead.
Despite being reduced to 14 men due to a red card for IG Prinsloo, the Griquas’ defensive structures held firm. However, with only five minutes left in the game, the Bulls added two tries.
Wehr’s hat-trick rightly made headlines as well as sealed his man of the match, but this win was defined by collective effort.
Halfbacks steered play with intelligence and composure. Backline combinations created chances and kept the Bulls’ defence on the back foot.
- Scorers for the Suzuki Griquas are: Tries – Gurswin Wehr (3), Cebo Dlamini, Janco Uys, Zane Bester. Conversions โ George Whitehead (6).
- In the meantime, the Avbob Griquas Women lost by 22-31 against the Pumas Women on Friday, 23 August, during the semi-final showdown at the Nelspruit Rugby Club in Mbombela.
