WESTERN CAPE – The N1 between Leeu Gamka and Prins Albert has reopened to traffic after authorities closed the highway for several hours following a deadly crash that killed 21 people on Monday morning.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed that 21 people died in the multiple-vehicle collision, which happened in the early hours of Monday, 14 September.
The crash involved two Toyota Quantum taxis and a Suzuki Brezza SUV.
Death toll subject to confirmation
The RTMC said emergency services and authorities in the Western Cape continue to assess the scene, and the death toll remains subject to confirmation.
Crash investigators travelled to the scene to establish more facts about the collision.
Concerns over driver behaviour and licensing
Alida Venter, founder of Drive More Safely NPO, said the organisation was “once more horrified by yet another crash on the notorious N1 with 21 lives lost”.
She said the crash reminded her of a 2011 incident near Laingsburg where 24 people died.
Venter raised concerns about driver behaviour and said too many lives were being lost on South African roads.
Calls for licensing system overhaul
While some blame could be placed on government, Venter said motorists also had a responsibility for road safety.
“We need to remember that it is not government who is behind the controls of the vehicles,” she said.
She called for greater scrutiny of the licensing system and driving tests.
“A serious look at the licensing system needs to happen, the driving test and the fitness and capability of drivers to control a certain class of vehicle,” Venter said.
The board of Drive More Safely NPO extended its condolences to the families and friends of those who died and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
The organisation pledged its continued efforts to assist in making South African roads safer.
The RTMC investigation into the crash is continuing, with further information expected as authorities establish more facts.
