The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) Western Cape is deeply saddened by two tragic road accidents involving minibus taxis that occurred within 24 hours of each other.
The first, which occurred about 23:30 on the N1 thoroughfare between Leeu-Gamka and the R353 that leads to Prince Albert, on Sunday 13 September, involving two minibus taxis and a station wagon, saw at least 21 people die.

The other occurred on Monday the 14th on Nelson Mandela Boulevard on the outskirts of the city, in which one person died and 13 were injured.
Heartfelt condolences
Santaco WC public relations officer Makhosandile Tumana said the organisation expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of those who lost their lives. He said thoughts and prayers were with them all as well as all the injured, that their strength would be restored and they would make a full recovery.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life. Behind every life lost is a family and a community now grieving, and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this incredibly difficult time. May the souls of those who lost their lives rest in peace.
“As an industry entrusted with transporting people every day we carry a responsibility to put safety first. Santaco WC does not condone reckless or irresponsible driving, and we continue to urge all operators and drivers to exercise the highest level of care and responsibility on our roads.”
Engaging with authorities
Tumana said where public-transport operators are involved Santaco WC would engage with the relevant authorities and structures to establish the facts and ensure the appropriate processes are followed.
“The circumstances surrounding these incidents remain under investigation. We therefore urge the public and media to allow the relevant authorities to complete their investigations. Santaco WC will not speculate on the causes or apportion blame before the facts have been established.”
Santaco WC stands in solidarity with the families and communities affected and remains committed to promoting safer and more responsible public transport.
