Elon Musk is set to open his wallet for Republicans ahead of November’s midterm elections, pouring money into a political operation that helped Donald Trump reclaim the White House in 2024.
The world’s richest person plans to reactivate America PAC, the political organisation that spent more than $260 million backing Trump’s successful presidential bid, according to a report by Axios on Thursday.
The group will focus on door-to-door canvassing, digital advertising and direct mail campaigns aimed at getting conservative voters to the polls. These voters typically show up in lower numbers during midterm elections when the presidency is not at stake.
Financial firepower for Republicans
Musk has not said how much he intends to spend this time around. America PAC did not respond to requests for comment.
The intervention comes as Republicans face mounting challenges holding onto their narrow House and Senate majorities. Trump’s weak approval ratings, economic concerns and opposition to the Iran war have put the party under pressure.
Republican groups already hold a substantial financial advantage over Democrats. Trump’s MAGA Inc organisation alone has raised hundreds of millions of dollars.
Rocky relationship with Trump
Musk’s return to Republican politics follows a turbulent period with Trump. He briefly served in the administration as head of the Department of Government Efficiency before falling out publicly with the president over Republican spending legislation.
At one point, Musk even suggested he might create a third party. He has since returned to the Republican fold, making multimillion-dollar donations to individual candidates and conservative groups.
Legal troubles over campaign tactics
Musk’s campaign activities have landed him in legal hot water. A federal judge ordered him to testify in lawsuits claiming America PAC misled voters over a $1 million daily giveaway to registered voters who signed a political petition before the 2024 election.
The lawsuits allege winners were not chosen randomly as Musk suggested, but selected because they could serve as effective spokespeople for the organisation.
A Wisconsin panel also found that similar payments during a state Supreme Court campaign may have broken bribery laws.
Musk’s spending highlights the growing influence of billionaire donors in American elections. Wealthy families have already contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the 2026 campaign, with most of the money flowing to Republican candidates and organisations.
Democrats also receive support from wealthy backers including George and Alex Soros, Reid Hoffman and Michael Bloomberg, but Republican-aligned billionaires have contributed significantly more so far.
America PAC’s campaign will be led by Musk political adviser Chris Young and coordinated with other Republican groups, allowing them to focus more resources on television advertising.
