KIMBERLEY – A 38-year-old murder suspect who had been on the run since 2020 after she absconded when released on bail, was traced and arrested in Cape Town.

Acting on a request from the police in Calvinia, members of the Northern Cape Tracking Team successfully traced and arrested Ragel Baardman in Cape Town.

Sergeant Timothy Sam of the Northern Cape Media Centre, said it is alleged that in June 2020, Baardman, then 32 years old, visited her 47-year-old uncle in Calvinia together with her boyfriend.

An argument reportedly broke out, during which she allegedly armed herself with a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest. The uncle later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Following the incident, Baardman was arrested and granted bail, but she absconded and had been on the run ever since.

After an extensive intelligence-driven investigation, the Northern Cape Tracking Team, assisted by information from the public, located her in Cape Town. She was apprehended on Monday, 25 August, in the Zonnebloem informal settlement and was expected to appear in the Calvinia Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 26 August.

Sam once again reminded the public to continue reporting criminal activities by contacting SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or by using the MySAPS App. All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
