A multi-million rand cocaine smuggling operation was dismantled yesterday evening when law enforcement seized drugs worth R20 million at a smallholding in Midrand, Gauteng.

The crime intelligence-driven operation unfolded on 28 October at a plot in Blue Hills, Midrand, following a coordinated effort by multiple law enforcement agencies.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the operation was spearheaded by Crime Intelligence Head Office in partnership with the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, SAPS Johannesburg K9 Unit, and members of the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC).

“The team was acting on intelligence about drugs being stored at the location,” Mathe explained.

During the operation, officers discovered approximately 80 kilograms of cocaine concealed in a storage room on the identified plot. “The cocaine was found hidden in a storage room on the identified plot,” Mathe confirmed.

A 56-year-old man, believed to be the owner of the property, was arrested in connection with the seizure. The substantial drug haul represents a significant blow to organised crime operations in the region.

Initial investigations revealed the seized cocaine formed part of an international trafficking network, with the drugs allegedly transported into South Africa from a neighbouring country. The consignment was reportedly destined for distribution in Cape Town, Western Cape.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Midrand Magistrates’ Court later this week, where he will face charges of possession of drugs as well as dealing in drugs.

The successful operation highlights the ongoing efforts by South African law enforcement agencies to combat cross-border drug trafficking and disrupt organised crime networks operating within the country’s borders.

Further investigations are underway as authorities work to dismantle the broader trafficking network and identify additional suspects.
