GORDON’S BAY – Firefighters have been monitoring a mountain fire in the Overstrand Municipality that burned towards the Kogelbaai area over the weekend, with teams working through the night to stop the spread towards Gordon’s Bay.

Michael Abrahams, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue service, said an incident management team was sent to the mountain slopes on Friday afternoon after the fire began moving towards the Kogelbaai area.

The terrain made it impossible for firefighters to reach the blaze, so teams kept watch on the situation.

“On Saturday a drone unit was deployed to provide aerial intelligence and monitor the fire’s movement. The fire crossed the city’s boundary and additional resources were deployed,” Abrahams said.

The road to Rooiels was closed and the city’s firefighting team worked throughout the night to stop the spread towards Gordon’s Bay.

At this stage no lives or property are in danger and no injuries have been reported.

Firefighters are keeping watch so they can respond as conditions change.
