Addis Ababa – A South African journalist who had been missing in Djibouti since Saturday, was safe after being expelled from the country, his family said Tuesday.

Djibouti’s authorities said Micah Reddy, 39, who also has British citizenship, had been detained for lacking accreditation.

Reddy, the Africa coordinator for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, travelled to Djibouti on assignment on Thursday but lost contact with his employers on Saturday and there had been no word on his whereabouts.

“It is with the most immense relief that I can now report that Micah is safely out of Djibouti,” his brother, Niall, told AFP.

He was expelled to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, and would soon return to South Africa, he added.

Djibouti’s Ministry of the Interior told AFP in a statement that Reddy had “failed to obtain the accreditation required for any media professional”.

“He was apprehended in the field while engaging in activities contrary to the purpose of his visit and was ordered to leave the national territory this Tuesday,” the ministry said.

Reddy’s Djiboutian fixer, Kooki Mohamed, who had also gone missing, was released without charge, Reddy’s family said.

Djibouti ranks 167th out of 180 in the 2026 press freedom index by Reporters Without Borders.
