HARTBEESPOORT – A Grade 12 learner has died after being struck by a scholar transport bus during a chaotic incident at Schaumburg Combined School that erupted when four intruders entered the school premises last Thursday.
The 17-year-old girl, who had just completed her matric examinations, died due to her injuries on Sunday at a hospital in Ga-Rankuwa, three days after the violent altercation that left also left four learners injured.
The incident began on 20 November when four boys gained entry to the school by climbing through a fence at the back of the premises. The intruders then confronted Grade 12 learners who were leaving the school after finishing their final examinations, sparking a fight that quickly escalated.
As the altercation intensified, learners from lower grades joined the commotion, creating widespread chaos on the school grounds. Teachers attempted to restore order by directing students toward the waiting transport buses.
However, the situation deteriorated further at the bus loading area when some learners tried to forcefully take control of the vehicles. Fearing for his safety, a bus driver attempted to escape the unrest by driving away, and in doing so striking four learners in the process – three Grade 12 students and one Grade 10 learner.
Emergency medical services were immediately summoned, and all injured learners were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The violence subsided only when students realised the severity of the injuries sustained by their peers.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life,” said Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education. “This young woman had successfully completed her matric examinations and had her whole future ahead of her. Our hearts go out to her family during this difficult time.”
Mabona condemned the actions of those responsible for instigating the violence. “We will not tolerate such reckless behavior that puts our learners at risk,” he said. “We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure that those responsible face the full might of the law.”
Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the school has been provided with psychosocial support teams to assist traumatised learners and staff.
