PIETERMARITZBURG – Emergency crews responded to a major fire at the Jika Joe Informal Settlement on Saturday afternoon, August 8 2026, as a fast-moving blaze swept through the area and damaged an estimated 100 homes.

Despite the extent of the damage, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Swift response to a rapidly spreading blaze

The emergency call was logged at approximately 14:47, with initial firefighting units arriving at the scene by 15:04. Firefighters were met with a severe scenario, as a large section of the informal settlement was already engulfed in heavy flames upon their arrival.

Desperate residents were seen evacuating the area, dragging personal belongings into nearby streets as fire crews moved in to establish a defensive perimeter to protect neighbouring structures.

A heavy deployment of emergency equipment was mobilised to combat the inferno:

  • The Msunduzi Fire and Rescue Services deployed three major pumpers, two Sakkie Bakkies, and a dedicated water tanker.
  • The Ashburton District Fire Services provided critical reinforcement with two additional fire appliances.

While the blaze has since been brought under control, crews remain on high alert at the scene to extinguish residual hotspots and secure the area against potential reignition.
