British authorities are investigating a mass stabbing aboard a London-bound passenger train that left multiple people injured and two victims fighting for their lives, police announced Sunday.

Two British nationals were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the Saturday evening attack, which unfolded on a busy route between Doncaster and London’s King’s Cross Station. Police have ruled out terrorism as a motive.

The emergency began at approximately 7:40 GMT Saturday when passengers alerted authorities to an attack in progress. The train was immediately diverted to Huntingdon station in Cambridgeshire, where armed officers, ambulances, and air rescue units converged on the scene.

“Police boarded the train and arrested two people within eight minutes of the first 999 call,” Superintendent John Loveless of the British Transport Police told reporters Sunday.

Of the 10 people initially hospitalized, four have been discharged. Two passengers remained in life-threatening condition Sunday morning, authorities said.

Passengers aboard the train recounted harrowing scenes as an attacker wielding a large knife moved through carriages.

“I heard people shouting ‘run, run, there’s a guy literally stabbing everyone,’” witness Olly Foster told the BBC. Foster initially dismissed the commotion as a Halloween prank until passengers began frantically pushing through the carriage.

Foster discovered his hand “covered in blood” from a seat he had touched, and witnessed an elderly man heroically blocking the assailant from attacking a young girl. Though the assault “felt like forever,” he said it lasted only minutes.

Other passengers described “blood everywhere” as people sought refuge in washrooms. Witnesses on the platform reported seeing a man with a large knife before police used a taser to subdue and arrest him.

The two arrested suspects are “a 32-year-old man, a black British national, and a 35-year-old man, a British national of Caribbean descent,” Loveless confirmed. Both were born in the United Kingdom.

Police and Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood emphasized the suspects’ British origins amid social media speculation fueled by rising anti-immigration sentiment. Recent attacks have spawned rapid misinformation campaigns falsely blaming immigrants or asylum seekers.

The motive remains under investigation, with Huntingdon station closed to the public as forensic teams examine the crime scene.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “appalling” and “deeply concerning.” King Charles III and Queen Camilla said they were “truly appalled and shocked” by the attack.

London North Eastern Railway advised passengers to avoid travel Sunday due to ongoing disruptions, warning services could face short-notice cancellations.

“Passengers will see a high visibility presence of police officers at stations and on trains throughout today,” Loveless assured the public.

The attack highlights Britain’s escalating knife crime epidemic. Official data shows knife crime in England and Wales has risen steadily since 2011, prompting Starmer to label it a “national crisis.”

While Britain maintains some of the world’s strictest gun controls, knife attacks have plagued the country. Recent incidents include the July 2024 murder of three girls at a Southport dance class—one of the nation’s worst mass stabbings—and an October synagogue attack in Manchester that killed two people.

Just Thursday, a man appeared in London court charged with murder following a broad-daylight stabbing that left one dead and two injured.

Starmer’s Labour government has prioritized addressing the knife crime surge as a key public safety initiative.
