BLOEMFONTEIN – A prompt response by members of the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit in Bloemfontein to the fatal stabbing of a young man in Bloemfontein in the early hours today – Sunday, 20 July – has led to the arrest of three suspects and the gathering of incriminating evidence.

Sgt Mahlomola Kareli, spokesperson for the Free State police, says members on night duty were on patrol when they received information about a deadly knife attack in the middle of the night at approximately 01:15. He said the fatal stabbing of an unidentified man, believed to be about 30 years old, occurred in Phahameng, a township in Bloemfontein.

“At the scene, members of the Anti-Gang Unit quickly gathered information about the suspects involved. The officers proceeded to several addresses, leading to the apprehension of three male suspects, aged between 20 and 21 years. Two of the suspects were found with bloodstains on their clothing. Further investigation led to the discovery of the suspected murder weapon, an Okapi knife with bloodstains, hidden on top of a wardrobe,” says Kareli.

He says the deceased appeared to have succumbed to a stab wound in the chest following an attack with the knife.

Kareli says the motive for the fatal stabbing is part of the investigation, adding that the suspects are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court soon, facing charge of murder.  They are in custody following their arrest.
