A massive manhunt is underway for the killers of a Crime Intelligence officer who was shot dead in Mount Edgecombe, Durban, on Thursday afternoon.

Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane said maximum resources have been mobilised to track down the attackers who opened fire on two officers travelling in a state vehicle in the KwaZulu-Natal suburb.

Specialised units, including Crime Intelligence operatives, detectives, the organised crime unit and highly trained police officers are working around the clock to apprehend those responsible.

The driver of the vehicle died from gunshot wounds sustained at the scene, while his colleague was airlifted to hospital where he is receiving urgent medical care.

Dimpane condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on the authority of the state and those who risk their lives in the fight against crime.

“No stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” she said.

The South African Police Service has deployed Employee Health and Wellness experts, including psychologists and chaplains, to support the family of the deceased officer and members of the Crime Intelligence unit.

The police service extended condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen officer and wished the injured member a full and speedy recovery.
