THABONG, WELKOM – A 49-year-old man has been arrested following an alleged accidental shooting incident that resulted in the death of his 22-year-old nephew in Thabong.
Police received a murder complaint from a local hospital on Sunday, 11 January, at approximately 23:47. Upon arrival, officers were directed to the body of the deceased, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim had succumbed to his injuries after being brought to the hospital by family members and was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the young man was allegedly accidentally shot at home by his uncle. According to the suspect’s account, he believed there was an intruder in the kitchen and discharged his firearm, fatally wounding his nephew.
Police have confiscated the firearm, its licence, and seven live rounds of ammunition for further investigation. The circumstances surrounding the shooting incident will form part of the ongoing police inquiry.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and is expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 13 January 2026, on a charge of murder.
