WELKOM – The SAPS in the Goldfields has delivered a stern warning to criminals and offenders as part of its intensified Festive Season High-Density Operations, recording a total of 14 successes over the past weekend. These efforts were specifically focused on combating illegal liquor trading, drunk driving, and enhancing visible policing across the region.

Hotspots targeted

An early operation in Odendaalsrus, running from Friday 28 November at 22:00 to Saturday at 04:00, yielded immediate results by focusing on major routes and known hotspots. The operation concluded with 10 successes, directly impacting crime generators.

Key achievements included:

  • two suspects arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol;
  • one suspect apprehended for dealing in cannabis;
  • strong action against illegal alcohol sales, leading to the closure of two illegal shebeens; and
  • five fines issued for various liquor-related contraventions.

Thabong high-density operation

The intensity was amplified during a high-density operation executed in Thabong between Saturday evening and the early hours of Sunday, from 20:00 to 04:00. This operation involved a substantial deployment of personnel from various police units, including Visible Policing, Public Order Policing (POP), and Corporate Communication, to ensure high visibility and proactive policing.

Comprehensive enforcement results

The coordinated operation resulted in the arrest of two individuals and several fines:

  • one suspect arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol;
  • one person arrested for contravention of the Immigration Act; and
  • four fines issued for contravening the Liquor Act.

The successful operation was characterised by high community engagement and focused searches:

  • 608 persons searched;
  • 344 vehicles searched; and
  • 28 compliance inspections conducted on businesses and premises.

Sustained Operations Promised

The SAPS reassures the community that these enhanced operations will be sustained throughout the festive period to ensure the safety of all citizens.
