MAKAPANSTAD – Six suspects between the ages of 44 and 55 have been arrested following the discovery of a sophisticated clandestine drug laboratory worth millions of rands in Makapanstad, North West Province.
The operation, conducted by members of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit based in the Western Cape, working alongside Counter-narcotics and Gangs specialists, uncovered an extensive mandrax manufacturing operation at a smallholding in Thulwe, north-west of Maubane.
The breakthrough came when investigators followed up on information relating to a suspect who had fled in an unrelated drug proliferation case. The intelligence led the elite Hawks unit to the remote property where they made the significant discovery.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers found all six suspects actively engaged in the manufacturing process of mandrax, a dangerous synthetic drug that has plagued South African communities for decades.
The raid revealed the scale of the illegal operation, with authorities seizing large quantities of both finished products in tablet form and raw powder materials. The sophisticated setup included industrial equipment typically used in drug manufacturing operations.
“During the operation, we confiscated drug presses, crusher machines, scales, and packaging bags,” said police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale.
The six arrested suspects are expected to appear in court soon, facing charges related to the manufacturing of illegal drugs. The charges carry substantial penalties under South Africa’s drug legislation, reflecting the serious nature of their alleged crimes.
This latest bust forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the proliferation of illegal drugs and dismantle the networks responsible for their production and distribution across the country.
