CAPE TOWN-Several learners who were allegedly involved in a school bullying incident at Pelican Park High School, have been suspended the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed this week.

The suspension stems from video footage of a violent scene at the school featuring multiple physical altercations breaking out simultaneously between several groups of learners on Wednesday 18 February.

Following the incident, Pelican Park High School issued a formal media statement on Friday February 20 after the video depicting a violent altercation between a group of its learners began circulating widely on social media

The school confirmed they were aware of a video currently circulating on social media depicting an incident involving learners engaged in a physical altercation. “The matter has been addressed in accordance with the school’s Code of Conduct and all appropriate disciplinary procedures have been followed.

We wish to place on record that the sharing and distribution of this video is both irresponsible and unlawful,” the statement read.

The WCED said they were also aware of the incident and that the learners were identified.

“The learners that have been identified to having been involved have been suspended while the School Governing Body (SGB) investigates the matter,” said WCED spokesperson, Unathi Booi.

A disciplinary process is currently underway.
