WESTERN CAPE – A head-on collision between a bus and an SUV on the N2 highway between Heidelberg and Riversdale claimed three lives and left 14 people injured on Tuesday morning.
The Western Cape Mobility Chief Director for Traffic Management, Maxine Bezuidenhout, confirmed the accident involved a 22 to 25-seater bus and an SUV and occurred at approximately 10:00.
“Tragically, three people have lost their lives, and a further 14 people have sustained injuries,” Bezuidenhout said.
According to police, two of the deceased were occupants of the SUV and the third was a passenger on the bus. All three victims were declared dead at the scene.
Emergency services remain on site providing medical assistance to the injured and managing the incident. The total number of people on both vehicles has not yet been confirmed.
The N2 is currently closed to traffic while emergency personnel and investigators attend the scene. Heidelberg Police have opened a case of culpable homicide, though the cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed and remains under official investigation.
Motorists travelling in the area have been advised to use a detour via the Slangrivier turn-off towards Heidelberg. Significant delays are expected.
Bezuidenhout urged road users to exercise patience and follow the instructions of traffic officials on scene.
The crash comes just one week after a devastating bus accident on the N1 highway near Touws River, where a bus carrying 73 passengers overturned, killing 16 people and seriously injuring two others.
