EZIBELENI based side, Amavarara FC, have opened up a three-point lead at the top of Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Swartkops Valley United Brothers FC at the Dumpy Adams Sports Complex in Komani on Saturday.
The home side secured the result thanks to a second-half goal from Cacadu-born defender, Sapholwethu Kelephu, who scored from a set piece.
Amavarara have now won three matches out of three this season and are still at the top of the log with nine points, while SUBS is in 10th position with four points after three games.
Swartkops, who were frequently trying to catch the home side on counter attacks, had a very organised defence on the day, which was mentioned by Amavarara’s assistant coach, Wiseman Mdunana.
“There were many things that happened during that game,” said the long-serving Mdunana.
“We played against a very strong team and we had to change plans during the course of the game to make sure we won. They came here with one purpose, which was to get a point (for a draw) and that showed in their way of defending, which frustrated us,” said Mdunana
“Honestly, we are not looking at the number of wins in a row; we are looking at the structure and our preparations for the next game. We are happy to be on top of the log nonetheless,” he said.
In their next game in the ABC Motsepe League, ‘Varara’ will be on the road, visiting Spear of the Nation FC at Kwabulala Sports Field in Mbhizana on Saturday afternoon.
“They are a closed book to us, as they are new in the ABC Motsepe League this season. But it is very important to focus on our game, more than on our opponents. We are ready for our next challenge,” concluded Mdunana.
