KNYSNA – A local Knysna man remains hospitalised following a serious para-kiting accident at Buffalo Bay main beach, with medical updates revealing he has sustained three broken bones and five fractured vertebrae.
The 5th November incident hapened Wednesday 5 November and left the para-kiting enthusiast seriously injured after what emergency responders described as a “severe landing” near the high-water mark during Wednesday afternoon’s activities.

Emergency services mounted an immediate multi-agency response after receiving reports of the accident at 15:39, with the approaching Spring high tide adding urgency to the rescue operation.
NSRI Knysna Station Commander Jerome Simonis confirmed that rescue crews deployed two craft, Eileen Meadway and JAYTEE IV, alongside the NSRI rescue vehicle. The response team was bolstered by Western Cape Government Health EMS, SANParks rangers, and an off-duty ER24 paramedic.
“Upon arrival at the scene, NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed into the surf and swam ashore, where they located the man seriously injured on the beach at the high-water mark following his para-kiting landing,” Simonis explained.
The challenging beach conditions prevented vehicular access, requiring rescue swimmers to reach the victim through the surf. NSRI medics immediately commenced treatment before being joined by paramedics and SANParks personnel.
“The patient was secured in a stretcher and transported to the Buffalo Bay Beach car park, where an EMS ambulance conveyed him to hospital in a serious but stable condition under paramedic care,” Simonis stated.
The Station Commander extended thoughts to the injured man and his family, noting: “All our care and consideration remain with the man and his family whilst he recovers in hospital under the care of medical professionals.”
The victim continues his recovery under medical supervision following the extensive injuries sustained in Wednesday’s accident.
