It is that time of the year again where young designers from different parts of the country will gather at InUWell Centre in the V&A Waterfront on Saturday 6 December to showcase their talent during the Khayelitsha Fashion Week.
At least 15 young designers will be taking the stage showing off their garments.
The theme for this year is African Royal Summer where their garments are expected to have a touch of African royal of different cultures.
The founder and organiser of the Khayelitsha Fashion Week, Bongani Mathenjwa, described the fashion show as one of its own. He said it is a platform established to showcase the talent of aspiring and local fashion designers and models around the country. He said its standard is improving each year.
“This is a platform for young designers to showcase their talent and what they are capable of. This is a stepping stone for them to crack in in the fashion industry. Every year we have a different theme,” said Mathenjwa.
He highlighted that on Saturday 29 November there will be a pre-party celebration at Omoda in Tygervalley where guests will enjoy exclusive previews as the designers will showcase their garments ahead of the main event.
Mathenjwa stated that most of the designers are all from Cape Town.
“One of the designers is coming from Engcobo (Eastern Cape), two from Durban (KwaZulu-Natal) and the rest are from Cape Town. We have one each from Bonteheuwel, Langa, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Mfuleni and Nyanga. Most of them are from school,” he said, citing that they are working with North Link (Bellville Campus) and Cape Town College of Fashion Design (CTCFD) from Cape Town.
Mathenjwa elaborated that to be a good designer one needs to be dedicated and passionate about what you are doing. He cited that the industry is not for fainthearted people.
“If you want to make quick money this is not a place to be. You need to be creative, dedicated and always ready to take a risk,” he stated. He also described the event as a platform for networking and socialising with other businesspeople in the country.
