Karla Pretorius is coming home. The Proteas netball star and current specialist coach at Kovsie Netball has been named the programme’s next head coach, marking a new chapter for one of South Africa’s most respected university netball operations.
The appointment, announced by the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, will see Pretorius officially take the reins at the end of the 2026 season when longtime head coach Burta de Kock steps down after years of service.
De Kock’s tenure has been nothing short of transformational. The outgoing coach has played a pivotal role in establishing Kovsie Netball as a powerhouse in university sport, developing talented student-athletes and fostering a culture of excellence both on and off the court.
Vision for varsity dominance
Jerry Laka, director of KovsieSport, made it clear that Pretorius’s appointment is part of a broader ambition to restore the University of the Free State as the dominant force in university netball.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of our new head coach for Kovsie Netball,” Laka said in a press statement. “This appointment forms an important part of our vision to establish the UV as a dominant force in university netball once again.
“The coach brings a wealth of experience, strong leadership and a clear understanding of the development pathway of student-athletes to the role. We are convinced that our netball programme will continue to excel on and off the court under her leadership.”
Full circle moment
For Pretorius, who currently works as a specialist coach alongside De Kock, the appointment represents both a significant responsibility and an exciting challenge – not to mention a homecoming.
“The UV is where I earned my degree, got my first real exposure to high-performance netball, gained invaluable experience and grew tremendously as a person,” Pretorius said. “Years later, it has also become a place where I could continue to learn, develop and find my feet as a coach.
“I look forward to helping shape the next generation of players and contributing to the continued growth and success of Kovsie Netball.”
From player to coach
Pretorius’s journey from student-athlete at the University of the Free State to international netball star and now head coach is a testament to the programme’s ability to nurture talent. Her appointment brings elite-level playing experience and international pedigree to a role that demands both tactical acumen and the ability to develop young players.
Currently serving as specialist coach, Pretorius has already demonstrated her coaching credentials whilst working under De Kock’s guidance. The transition period leading up to the end of the 2026 season will allow for continuity and ensure a smooth handover between the two coaches.
With Pretorius at the helm from 2027 onwards, the programme will benefit from her firsthand knowledge of what it takes to succeed at the international level.
For De Kock, stepping down at the end of 2026 will mark the conclusion of a distinguished coaching career at the university. Her legacy, built on player development and sustained excellence, provides a solid foundation for Pretorius to build upon.
