K9 sniffs out crystal meth worth millions on truck bound for Cape Town

A tip-off and a dedicated police team in Worcester led to the confiscation of crystal meth, also known as tik, worth millions of rands in a transport truck underway to Cape Town.

The Breede River K9 Unit received a tip-off that the drug shipment would be transported from Johannesburg to Cape Town on Monday 23 March, said provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg.

The unit extended its shift and kept a close eye on the N1 highway until the truck, carrying two containers, was spotted just outside Worcester.

The truck was stopped and Bella, one of the unit’s narcotic dogs, sniffed through the driver’s compartment and reacted to two boxes. The police found 20 plastic containers with methamphetamine (crystal meth or tik) to the value of R5,6 million.

A 59-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of drugs. He was due to appear in the Worcester Magistrates’ Court once he had been charged.
