Shoppers visiting Woolworths stores over the weekend may have been surprised to find K9 sniffer dogs on patrol as the retailer stepped up security across the country following two explosions at its stores last week.
In a social media post, Woolworths acknowledged the dogs’ presence with a light-hearted message, saying: “Hi Woolies shoppers, this weekend we had a few esteemed guests in attendance at stores across the country.
“A big thank you to all the selfless helpers who are working (and sniffing) hard to keep us all safe.”
It is not clear whether the dogs formed part of the broader security measures or whether they were explosive detection dogs.

According to Woolworths, the first incident occurred at its Menlyn Park store in Pretoria during the early hours of Thursday, 28 May, while the second took place at its Preller Square branch in Bloemfontein on Friday, 29 May.
The retailer said both devices were detonated between 01:00 and 02:00 while the stores were closed, and no injuries were reported.
“Most importantly, Woolworths is relieved to share that no one was harmed in either incident,” the company said in a statement.
As a precautionary measure, vigilance has been increased across all Woolworths stores nationwide, while specialist forensic experts have been contracted to strengthen security and intelligence efforts in support of law enforcement investigations.
Incoming Group CEO Sam Ngumeni said the retailer remained committed to protecting its employees and customers.
“Woolworths is a proudly South African brand that stands for integrity and the courage to do the right thing,” he said. “We are taking every action and doing everything in our power to protect our people and customers, who remain our first priority,” he said.
“Our doors will stay open, and our values will continue to be evident in every experience and every product, as they have always been.”
