John Dobson has thrown down the gauntlet. The Stormers coach isn’t just targeting a respectable showing in this season’s Champions Cup, he’s demanding that South African rugby finally cracks European club rugby’s most prestigious competition, and he wants his side leading the charge.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s tournament opener against Bristol Bears in Cape Town, Dobson delivered a mission statement that transcends the Stormers’ own ambitions. This isn’t just about one franchise anymore. It’s about validating South Africa’s place at the top table of world rugby, silencing the doubters, and proving that the Rainbow Nation’s clubs belong amongst Europe’s elite.

“We need a South African team to make a semi-final or a final this season,” Dobson declared, the weight of expectation clear in his words. “We’re so grateful to be part of this competition. From our side, we want to respect it, and the way to do that is to do well in it.”

The subtext is impossible to ignore. South African franchises have struggled to make an impact since joining European competition, their campaigns often derailed by the brutal reality of competing simultaneously in both the United Rugby Championship and the Champions Cup. Squad depth that looks sufficient on paper gets stretched to breaking point when navigating two brutally competitive tournaments across different continents.

Fighting for survival

Those struggles haven’t gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, whispers emerged that SA Rugby was reconsidering the nation’s continued participation in the Champions Cup.

Last season’s last-16 exit at the hands of Toulon only added fuel to the fire. The Stormers, one of South Africa’s flagship franchises, had been dumped out before the business end of the tournament, reinforcing the narrative that SA sides simply can’t compete when European rugby’s intensity ratchets up.

“This year’s format makes navigating both competitions a little easier,” Dobson explained.

He knows that results, deep runs into knockout stages, semi-final appearances, maybe even a final, are the only currency that matters. Anything less and the whispers about withdrawing from the competition will become shouts.

“It’s a prestigious competition. It is a step up,” Dobson acknowledged. “We want to be at the top table of World Rugby. We desperately want to stay part of it. That’s why we respect the tournament as much as we can.”

Bristol bring the heat

Respecting the tournament starts with beating Bristol Bears on Saturday, and Dobson has no illusions about the scale of the challenge awaiting his side at Cape Town Stadium.

The Premiership outfit arrives with a fearsome reputation, particularly in two critical areas that could expose the Stormers if they’re not razor-sharp.

“They’re a team [that] when they kick and get going, [are] as good as any team in this competition,” Dobson warned. “Their maul is the best maul in the Premiership at the moment. They’re a team with enormous width of attack. So, it’s a big game.”

Saturday’s 16:15 kick-off represents more than just the opening round of the Stormers’ Champions Cup campaign. It’s a statement of intent, a declaration that South African rugby won’t be chased out of Europe without a fight.
