Joburg Super Kings secured a 22-run victory over Pretoria Capitals in Pretoria, with Duan Jansen’s exceptional bowling performance proving the difference in a thrilling encounter.

After winning the toss, Capitals captain elected to field first, a decision that initially appeared sound as Super Kings stumbled early. De Villiers departed for 13(10), caught behind after nicking a delivery, before Faf du Plessis followed suit for just 2(7), also falling to the wicketkeeper off Yusuf’s bowling.

The visitors finished the powerplay at a modest 5.64 runs per over, but Wiaan Mulder and Rilee Roussouw steadied the innings with a crucial partnership. The duo guided Super Kings to 56/2 by the ninth over before Roussouw’s aggressive 48 (33) ended when he was caught in the deep off Kyle Mills’ bowling.

Mulder continued the assault with consecutive sixes in the 14th over before falling for 43(28) to a Wayne Parsons delivery. Despite further wickets falling regularly, Super Kings posted a competitive 168/6 from their 20 overs, with Mills emerging as the most economical bowler for Capitals, finishing with figures of 2-17.

Capitals’ chase began promisingly, reaching 58 without loss after the powerplay—approximately 10 runs ahead of Super Kings at the same stage. Will Smeed and Parsons constructed a solid 50-run partnership before the innings dramatically shifted in the ninth over.

Smeed’s dismissal for 34(30) balls, bowled by Akeal Hosein whilst attempting a pull shot, proved the turning point. The collapse accelerated as Shai Hope 2 (6) fell to an unsteady drive caught by du Plessis, followed by Dewald Brevis 6 (6) who was caught behind attempting a hook shot.

Jansen emerged as the destroyer-in-chief, claiming four wickets for just 16 runs to dismantle Capitals’ middle order. Parsons’ departure for 41 (30), caught in the deep, triggered a dramatic collapse from 89/5 to 127/8.

Requiring 32 runs from the final over, Capitals’ hopes were extinguished by Richard Gleeson’s disciplined bowling. Two consecutive dot balls effectively ended the contest, with Capitals eventually finishing on 146/9, falling 22 runs short of their target.

Jansen’s magnificent spell proved decisive, transforming what appeared to be a straightforward chase into a comfortable victory for Super Kings. The all-rounder’s ability to strike at crucial moments highlighted his growing importance to the franchise.
