The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has called on eligible voters to register or update their voter registration details online ahead of the local government elections scheduled for 4 November.

The commission has reminded the public that its Online Voter Registration Portal is zero-rated across major mobile networks, allowing users to access the service without paying for mobile data.

This means voters can register or update their details even when they have no available data balance on their mobile phones.

The IEC has, however, stressed that users must switch mobile data on their phones to connect to the portal. While airtime or an existing data balance is not required to use the service, mobile connectivity must be enabled.

The commission has also announced that the final voter registration weekend takes place on 1 and 2 August, when registration stations will be open across the country for those who prefer to register in person.

The commission has encouraged voters not to wait until the last minute to check their registration information and to ensure that their details are up to date.

Voters can access the Online Voter Registration Portal at registertovote.elections.org.za.

The IEC is also encouraging citizens to participate in the electoral process under the message: “Your vote is your voice. Make your mark”.

The call comes as the country prepares for municipal elections in November, with the commission working to ensure maximum voter participation.

Zero-rating of the registration portal is aimed at removing barriers to voter registration, particularly for those who may not have access to regular data bundles.

The IEC has not yet announced the final deadline for voter registration ahead of the November elections.
