The Huguenot Tunnel has reopened to light motor vehicles, but heavy traffic, caravans and trailers remain barred as punishing winds continue to buffet the Boland region.

As of 10:00 this morning (5 September), Class 1 vehicles — standard cars and bakkies — are once again passing through the N1 tunnel in both directions. However, Class 2 to 4 vehicles, as well as anyone towing a caravan or trailer, are still not permitted to use the tunnel due to sustained high wind speeds that pose a safety risk to larger and high-sided vehicles.

Motorists who fall outside the Class 1 category will need to plan for a significantly longer journey. The Du Toitskloof and Bainskloof passes, which would normally serve as alternative routes over the mountains, also remain closed.

For those travelling from Cape Town to Worcester, the recommended detour follows Wellington to Gouda, then on to Tulbagh, Wolseley, the R46 and finally the N1 into Worcester. Worcester-bound drivers coming from Cape Town should allow considerable extra time for this route.

For the return trip — Worcester to Cape Town — motorists are advised to take the R46 to Wolseley, then through Tulbagh and Gouda to Wellington, and on to Cape Town.

Authorities have urged all motorists to plan accordingly, allow for additional travel time and follow the instructions of traffic officials deployed in the area. Updates will be issued as wind conditions change.
