Hockey on Founders Weekend – Kearsney College vs Maritzburg

Hockey on Founders Weekend. Kearsney College, KwaZulu-Natal, welcomed Maritzburg College to the Mason Astro on Founders Weekend. A vibrant crowd of parents, old boys, and supporters created a memorable backdrop for a fiercely contested encounter.

The opening exchanges reflected the intensity of the occasion, with both teams pressing aggressively and relying on disciplined defensive structures. Chances were scarce in a tightly fought first half, as neither side was willing to concede ground.

Both teams sought to build patiently through the wide channels, probing for space and opportunities in the attacking third. Despite promising passages of play, the deadlock persisted until Maritzburg College earned a penalty corner. A flick took an unfortunate deflection, wrong-footing the postman and finding its way into the net to hand the visitors a crucial breakthrough.

Buoyed by the opener, College seized control and soon doubled their advantage, extending the lead to 2–0. With a two-goal cushion, they managed the remainder of the match effectively, restricting Kearsney’s chances of a comeback.

Having enjoyed the better of the contest when the sides met earlier in the season at the MHS Cup, Kearsney were unable to reproduce that performance on this occasion. Both teams remained committed and worked tirelessly throughout, but it was Maritzburg College who deservedly claimed the spoils in front of a spirited Founders Weekend crowd.
